Christmas is a holiday of peace, meeting with family and friends, as well as a feast of quality and delicious food.
According to traditions in Slovakia, the Christmas Eve was a fasting day lasting somewhere to the evening, somewhere until midnight. Today's traditional food at the Christmas dinner is a Christmas sour cabbage soup, fish or fried schnitzel with salad. The first and second Christmas day were no longer fasting days, so there was always enough of meat, meat products, sausages and various smoked goodies on the Christmas table. Certainly, today few will scorn the excellent raw sausage in the sour cabbage soup, excellent Spiš smoked meats, or other goodies from the traditional meat producer TAURIS.
The New Year's Eve menu was very similar to the Christmas one. The same meals were also served on the New Year, but as to the meat there was not allowed to eat poultry or hares to have the luck "taken off" or property to "run away".
Good luck should be brought by pork-eating and lentils, which symbolized enough money. It was believed that the one who eats enough on New Year, will not suffer with anxiety during the whole next year ....
